Historic College Hill Neighborhood Association
Historic College Hill Neighborhood Association (HCHNA)
The HCHNA was formed in the 1990's by members of the community interested in preserving the nature
of the community. They successfully lobbied the City to establish a Historic Zoning Commission to serve the special nature of what became a historic overlay district for the community. The club is a State of Tennessee non-profit and hosts events such as home tours.
College Hill Historic District
The neighborhood rests principally between the north-south streets of Court St. and Montvail Rd.; going east-west the streets of Goddard Ave. to Wilson Ave. are included. Note the E. Goddard is included along with homes going south on S. Court St. to Boardman Ave. Only the east side of Montvail Rd. is included. It is approximately one mile south of downtown Maryville and on the doorstep of Maryville College. The neighborhood is largly walkable.
The area was mainly rural until the 1880's with a variety of homes many of which date between 1880 and 1939. Originally named after Indiana Ave. it was added to the National Register of Historic Place in 1989. The Historic College Hill overlay zone was created in the same year. It was championed by the Historic College Hill Neighborhood Association. As an overlay district it has rules meant to protect the historic nature of the homes there. Alterations to a home must be approved by the
Historic Zoning Commission.
